No one should go hungry in Bristol this Christmas

November 4, 2019

Christmas can be the best and worst time of the year. While many of us look forward to spending time with loved ones and spoiling ourselves, for others it's a real struggle. As families on very low incomes tend to rely on free school meals, the Christmas break can add to their misery which is only compounded by higher heating costs.

So every day this month I'll be taking part in the UK Money Bloggers reverse advent calendar and purchasing one food or household item to place in a hamper and give to my local food bank this Christmas. I'm doing it in November so that it can help a local family this December and I'm asking followers of Broke in Bristol - & Beyond to get involved by putting together their own food parcels and using the hashtag #FoodBankAdvent and tagging @BrokeinBristol and @UkMoneyBloggers in your posts.

If you want to get involved see what's already in your cupboards and try to add non perishable items. A typical food parcel includes:

  • Cereal

  • Soup

  • Pasta

  • Rice

  • Tinned tomatoes/ pasta sauce

  • Lentils, beans and pulses

  • Tinned meat

  • Tinned vegetables

  • Tea/coffee

  • Tinned fruit

  • Biscuits

  • UHT milk

  • Fruit juice

Many food banks also provide essential non-food items such as toiletries and hygiene products and you can find your local food bank here: https://www.trusselltrust.org/what-we-do/. If you can't afford to donate – don't worry – you can help spread the word and keep the campaign at the forefront of people's minds by posting a picture or a comment on the Broke in Bristol – & Beyond Facebook, Twitter or Instagram pages.

For those getting involved please share your food parcel pictures on my social media pages and with your friends and family. Let's do this!
