How to earn £800 a month hiring out your car

I’ve been contemplating whether I even need a car during lockdown. Most days it’s sat on the drive costing me around £100 a month in road tax, insurance and breakdown cover and I’m lucky if I drive it once a week to do my food shop.

So, wouldn’t it be nice if someone else paid the tax and insurance and you got to drive it when you needed with a few hundred pounds profit for you at the end of every month? More and more people are hiring out their cars to their neighbours and earning up t0 £800 a month for doing so.

Getaround (formerly Drivy) makes it so easy as you don’t even have to be home to do the handover. Instead, opt to have a Getaround Connect device installed and you won’t even have to leave your sofa.

Or try HiyaCar, there’s one parked on my street and it seems to be very popular with hirers. Listing with them could earn you £650 a month and they have introduced keyless technology QuickStart so that you don’t even have to be home when someone picks up your vehicle.

Another option is ZipCar (though I could only see information on how to rent not hire out) and EasyCarClub and Turo have combined forces to trade under one name: Turo. Its website says you can earn £574 a month and that it’s the world’s largest car sharing marketplace.

There’s absolutely no reason why you can’t list on all sites – just get yourself a separate online or paper diary just for this purpose (trust me I hired out my campervan for years and it does get confusing!). All your insurance is included and hirers are asked to take before and after pictures of the vehicle so if there’s damage they’ll know exactly who’s responsible

It’s a great way to not only make money but also to do your bit to help the environment. I’ll be hiring out a car in the future as prices start from just £6 an hour or $70 for the day. I’d love to hear from people who have saved or made money this way, please email
